OfficeMax the third-largest U.S. office-supply chain, said it hired Ravichandra Saligram, a former president at Aramark Corp., as chief executive officer.
Saligram, 54, will replace Sam Duncan on 8th November 2010, OfficeMax said today in a statement. Duncan, who announced his retirement earlier this year, will remain as an adviser through February. Rakesh Gangwal will move from director to chairman of the board to replace Duncan.
OfficeMax has been closing stores and cutting costs during the past four years as it faces mounting competition from discount chains such as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Target Corp. Office Depot have confirmed that Chairman and Chief Executive Steve Odland will resign in one week by mutual agreement with the board. The office-supply retailer also said it will report a surprise third-quarter profit Wednesday.
The sector has been hurt by the soft economy, especially high unemployment among white-collar workers. Office Depot has been combating sales weakness with cost cutting.
Third-quarter revenue is seen coming in around $2.9 billion, below the $2.95 billion average of analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters. But it expects to post a profit of 18 cents a share, including a net 15-cent gain, as operating expenses are seen falling 8%.
