Higher stock awards and a bigger bonus tied to the company’s performance helped push Staples’ CEO’s pay package up 41 percent to $15.1 million in 2010, when the office supply chain’s net income rose despite little revenue growth, according to a document the company filed Monday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Ron Sargent, 55, received a base salary of about $1.1 million plus a performance-based bonus of $2.4 million that was 82 percent more than the $1.3 million performance bonus he got in 2009, according to Associated Press calculations based on the document. … Continue Reading
Office Depot has reported weaker-than-expected quarterly results as consumers and businesses curbed spending on office supplies.
The news dragged down the shares of the second-largest U.S. office supplies retailer 6 percent in premarket trading on Tuesday. Sales fell about 3 percent to $2.97 billion, slightly short of the analysts’ average estimate of $2.98 billion. Sales at its 1,115 stores in the United States and Canada that have been open for more than a year fell 1 percent.
Many investors look at office supply retailers as a barometer of economic health because demand for their products is closely tied to white-collar employment rates. Their sales have suffered as consumers and small businesses have spentless. Some of Office Depot’s problems are company-specific, such as poor inventory control and the lack of a strong management team.
